I believe in student-centred, constructivist learning, where students are given responsibility for their own
learning. students learn in a variety of different ways. Understanding how students learn and the different ways is vital to the effectiveness of the classroom success. It is the responsibility of a good teacher to be adaptive and show initiative in encompassing the various styles in an effective classroom. I strongly believe that every student has the capability and the desire to learn. “Teach a child how to think, not what to think”, by Sidney Sugarman. Building relationships with the students and parents will assist with the outcome of the individual objectives for the students. Through the relationships and building mutual respect and
trust will enable the ability to understand the student’s needs and strengths. Providing a balance between challenging task but yet still achievable enhances the desire to succeed.
The students each had the same term goal, which was to create their own stall for a market. I have attached a few images and a single lesson plan below.
The term goal was economics, where the students learn all about developing a stall, selling various products, or their services which they decided upon based on their own interests. There were a variety of stalls from selling food to game arcades, jewellery stalls, card and posters and painting nails. The students were given a set budget and had to think of and research the product or service and how they would sell it to make a profit.
Throughout the process the students learnt about budgeting, advertising, supply
and demand, profits, developing roles, team work and time management. Throughout the term the students are involved in teacher instructed lessons as well as hands on investigated learning. This way allows the students to divide their time where they feel they need it.
