Both literacy and numeracy are fundamental to the education curriculum and it is central to the students development.
Using an active pedagogical tool, where the empowerment is in the individual student, creating a participant learner, by respecting the student’s input. It fosters the ability to motivate and create a sense of agency, allowing the students to be involved in their own learning. The discussion and interaction between peers is a crucial development to enhance their literacy skills, as it can further their process in the reading, writing, literacy and numeracy skills.
The importance of engaged learning is motivation, through active learners and the student`s participation in the process of investigation.
The investigation of numeracy is important through the engagement where the students can understand the meaning instead of getting told what numeracy is. Here I introduced a tally board to the students, where they are actively involved in creating a tally using both numeracy and literacy skills.

Below I have provided an example of a numeracy unit for grade 5/6. This shows the students are involved in lesson and rotational activities. I feel that providing rotational activities give the opportunity for the students to gain knowledge and investigate on numeracy in their own time. Using peer interaction is encouraged so that it is not always the teacher standing up and dictating the lesson. I feel it also empowers the students by giving confidence in contribute to the group discussions and assistance to peers, as they have already completed a rotation.
